The winter and holiday seasons are a great time to have family and friends over, but that also means that there will be extra feet and high heels scuffing up the floor. High foot traffic on wood floors can cause some homeowners anxiety and extra stress. Luckily, there are some preventative measures you can take to protect your hardwood floors during the holidays.
Placing synthetic rugs near the front doorway is an easy option to avoid damaging hardwood flooring during the holidays. These rugs add a layer of padding to the floor and also protects against gouges and scratches. Area rugs with vinyl backing are also a great way to protect your floors. Make sure to rotate them from time to time, to prevent areas from fading from natural sunlight.
Put mats in front of the kitchen sink and dishwasher to protect your floor from dropped utensils and spills of water, detergent, and food. Avoid mats with rubber or foam backing that prevent airflow and trap in dirt and moisture.
Pads and Casters
If you plan on moving the couch and other furniture for maximum mingling space, place some felt pads underneath the feet of all furniture to make it easier to move and prevent scratches. You can also use wide rubber or soft polyurethane casters for chair legs and table legs.
Sweep or Vacuum often
Clean floors once or twice a day in high-traffic areas by sweeping or vacuuming. This will prevent dirt buildup.
Avoid Oil-based Soaps/Detergents
Do not use oil-based soaps or detergents on hardwood floors. These oils will leave a greasy residue that makes your floor slippery and will damage the floor's finish.
No Wet Mops
Do not use a wet mop for spills onto your hardwood floors. Excessive amounts of water may dull the finish and be harmful to the floor. Instead, use a damp mop or wipe up any spilled liquid quickly from your floor with rags, paper towels or microfiber towels.
