How to Remove Pet Stains from Carpet

Even though we love our pets, sometimes they decide to, well, leave us some unpleasant “gifts” in our homes. These stains are some of the tougher stains to remove from carpet and other floors, and, because of their difficulty to remove, it’s not uncommon for pet owners to damage their carpets or floors in an effort to get them clean.

Here at Smart Carpet & Flooring, we want to help you keep your carpets as clean as possible. So, let’s review some proper cleaning techniques for how to remove pet stains from carpet.

First, you should know some basic information about this behavior in pets. Territorial marking is common among dogs and even cats, which can sometimes lead to urinating and relieving themselves in the house. While this is one explanation for why pets urinate indoors, there are a number of different reasons that can also cause this behavior. If this becomes a frequent habit, you should talk to your veterinarian to make sure your pet’s behavior is normal and not a sign of illness.

Once you’ve ruled out any illness, here are 4 easy steps to remove pet stains from carpeting.

Step 1: Blot up the urine gently with paper towels, don't re-use them.

Step 2: Use cold water to blot the stain. Put ice in a glass of cold water and pour some on the carpet, rub the ice cubes over the area. Blot up with paper towels.

Step 3: Put 1 teaspoon of clear or mild dish detergent in a measuring cup and then mix it with warm water. Pour some of the soapy water over the spot. Use as much as is needed to cover and saturate the stain. It is okay to saturate the carpet a bit in order to rub the sudsy water around. Let sit for 1-2 minutes.

Step 4: Using a vacuum cleaner, suck up the water and stain.

This whole clean-up process takes 10 minutes or less and can be repeated as many times as needed to remove the stain. After you do it once, this is an easy method to remember so you can use it again!
